A Dra. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) é uma conceituada antropóloga forense que trabalha no Instituto Jeffersonian e escreve contos de suspense nas hora vagas. Ela é chamada para ajudar nas investigações de assassinatos quando os métodos tradicionais para identificar corpos são inúteis — quando os restos mortais estão decompostos, queimados ou destruídos e irreconhecíveis. A especialidade única de Brennan é parte de sua estranha habilidade de ver pistas através dos ossos das vítimas. Brennan constantemente se vê ao lado do Agente Especial Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz, “Angel), um dos integrantes da Unidade de Investigações de Homicídios do FBI. Um ex-membro do exército, Booth suspeita da ciência e dos cientistas — que analisam atentamente as evidências físicas. Booth acredita que a chave para solucionar os crimes está na descoberta da verdade daqueles que ainda estão vivos — testemunhas e suspeitos — através do tradicional trabalho de investigação. Brennan e Booth frequentemente batem de frente em questões profissionais e pessoais, mas por enquanto a química entre eles só não deu certo no último conto de suspense que Brennan está escrevendo. Por não se adaptar muito ao mundo, Brennan sente-se mais confortável com seus também brilhantes colegas do Laboratório Médico-Legal da Jeffersonian. Ângela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin), realista e desbocada, é amiga de Brennan e a cientista que criou um método único para recriar a cena original do crime em imagens tridimensionais no computador. O assistente de Brennan, Zack Addy (Eric Millegan), é um jovem prodígio cujo genioso QI irá garantir que ele termine os diversos doutorados que ele está cursando. E o “cara dos insectos”, o Dr. Jack Hodgins (TJ Thyne), um especialista em insectos, esporas e minerais, mas que adora mesmo conspirações. O chefe de Brennan é o imponente director do laboratório, o Dr. Daniel Goodman (Jonathan Adams), que empresta seus serviços para o FBI. “BONES” é um drama policial com humor e coração — e uma obscura série que prova que há pelo menos um pingo de humanidade por trás dos cientistas que prova os desumanos actos por trás dos terríveis crimes.
